serious injury crash. one person apparently is dead after this collision. breaking news. newschopper2 has just arrived on the scene. you can see a badly damaged vehicle. we'll tell you more about what it is doing to the morning commute. >> reporter: police searched the home of a person of interest in the kevin comlins case. we'll tell you what they were looking for. >> reporter: we're live in san jose where police and fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire. we'll hear from a family who woke up to flames and you will also hear why this is the second time they've been vandalized. a 6-year-old boy is held hostage after a deadly shooting on a school bus. we'll go live to the scene.

"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." let's get right to sal. our newschopper2 is over the scene. this started off as a fatal crash. eastbound 580 at north greenville. you can see the car bassly damaged, fully engulfed in flames -- was fully damaged, fully engulfed in flames. this is blocking the two left lanes eastbound. however, westbound traffic is slow past the scene. we've had a huge backup coming out of the tracy area to livermore and to make things worse just down the road we're getting word of another crash

on 580 westbound at hacienda involving a motorcycle. but you can clearly see this is a tragic incident. it may be that one person was trapped inside the car while it was on fire. these are the reports we're getting. the chp is telling us this is going to be out there for a few hours as they investigate this collision. i want to put the map up of another crash in san mateo. 92 westbound at el camino real, this possibly involves a wrong- way driver, got into a wreck. there's an injury crash. avoid the area. back to the desk. we have continuing coverage now of a new search in a mysterious cold case dating back nearly 30 years. police went flew every square inch of a home in the haight ash haight-ashbury neighborhood. tara moriarty is live. that home is steps away from

where kevin collins disappeared in 1984. >> reporter: san francisco police are expected to release the name and the photo of the man who used to live in this house on masonic. he is longer alive but was a person of interest in the kevin collins. he was questioned after kevin vanished. he had an allah lib by -- alabi. the medical examiner believes the remains that they did found here are that of an animal. the last person kevin collins was talking to was a tall blond man with a big dog -- big dog. the man described like that used to live here. the dogs were never used in the initial search. so that's they came back.

>> i just hope there's closure for the family members. very sad story. >> reporter: neighbors we talk to say the school kevin attended st. agnes never recovered after the disappearance, closing a few years later. >> right after that, st. agnes started to pull some of their children out of the school. >> it's concerning. >> reporter: this morning, neighbors are really just amazed that this case has resurfaced. kevin's mother says she feels numb and doesn't know what to feel. she's been in touch with her children, her other children but has not been able to get ahold of her husband who lives in costa rica. the people in this duplex, they are not suspects. we'll keep you updated on the person and identity of the person of interest in this case. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> what would kevin be like at

39? what would he -- what would he be like? would he be married with children? >> and the family is hoping this will bring some closure. brian flores will that that part of the story -- will have that part of the story at 7:30. an alarming wakeup call to a family in san jose. they woke up to flames. janine de la vega is live at the scene. you say police think this is deliberate. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. this is an upper middle-class neighborhood with homes well over a million dollars. for some reason or another, the home right here has been targeted. here you can see yellow paint. this was from an earlier incident. the latest one happened this morning. here you can see in the entryway of this house, it's all black as well as the door. there's smoke damage there. that's because it was lit on fire. police and firefighters came to glenwood avenue at around -- at

around 3:00 this morning. they say the husband, wife and adult daughter herd a commotion. they walked out to find their front door was on fire. the homeowner was able to put it out before firefighters arrived. he told us that the morning before his daughter's ford focus was vandalized. the person who did this, apparently they left the screwdriver behind. the homeowner is completely rattled. he didn't want to be identified. he says he doesn't know why they are being targeted. >> i certainly want to find out what's going on and why. something like this is pretty extreme. one thing to trash a car, another thing to set your house on fire. they've stepped it up and -- for no reason. >> reporter: police knocked on doors and smoke to neighbors. they also did a search of the neighborhood but didn't find any information leading them to the person or persons responsible. an arson investigator also came to the scene to collect

evidence. police are calling this a strange case. there's not a lot of calls for service to the willow glen area. back out here live, the homeowners are gonna be dealing with how to get that front door fixed. they say they didn't get much sleep last night. they are gonna be looking into what their options or for more security. they also plan on talking to neighbors to tell them what's happened and to stay vigilant. coming up in the next hour of "mornings on 2," we're hoping to talk to some of those neighbors. you will hear more from the homeowner. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:07. happening right now in washington, d.c., the senate judiciary committee is holding a hearing on gun violence. we're live in the middle of the hearing right now. live pictures there. this is the first congressional hearing on gun violence since the connecticut school shooting. we just found out former congresswoman gabrielle giffords will testify at this hearing. coming up at 7:15, the position

the national rifle association says it will take when they testify this morning. 7:08. we want to check in with sal once again for an update on some of the serious accidents in the bay area. >> yeah. eastbound 580 a deadly crash at north greenville road happened about an hour ago now. the car was fully engulfed in flames here. i apologize, we're losing our chopper picture. let's show you a map. it's eastbound 580 at north greenville load. but the traffic is going to -- road. but the traffic is going to be slow. just about five miles west, there is a motorcycle crash on 580 westbound right near hacienda, almost at 680 that's causing another big traffic. ja. it's very, very slow. let's go to the commute here at the toll plaza. gonna see slow traffic there. no major problems as you come through. we have a crash on eastbound 92. if we can go back to the maps.

this is a crash eastbound 92 in san mateo. that traffic is gonna be slow there as well. a lot of problems, give yourself extra time. another update at 7:09. good morning to you. some beautiful colors to start off wednesday morning. looking out towards oakland. a few high clouds out there, not much in the way of dense fog. we could have a patches developing in the short-term. the headline for today will be warmer. upper 50s yesterday, to lower 60s. everybody up a little bit for today. santa rosa, up to 64 degrees. san jose, instead of the 50s we'll warm you back to the lower 60s. that's after a pretty chilly start this morning. fairfield right now, 36 degrees. santa rosa, 36. san francisco, 47. and hayward reporting 43 degrees with mostly clear skies. for this morning, we're showing you the cold numbers here, the dark colors, 30s and 40s. we'll put this into motion.

you will see a nice recovery here. upper 50s hucking the coastline -- hugging the coastline. concord, livermore, fremont, down to san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. here's the big perspective. you will notice the clouds, they are arcing up to the north as high pressure is strengthening offshore. with that it pushes all of the storms. we have a dry weather pattern for today and also right on through the weekend. 8:00 this morning, upper 30s to the upper 40s. by 12:00, you will see this, 53 to 58. during the afternoon you hours by 3:00 for afternoon highs. 53 to 63 degrees under mostly sunny skies. everybody up a few degrees from yesterday's highs. these are just some minor changes for santa rosa and oakland. san jose will go 63 and san mateo 61. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view. temperatures a little bit warmer for your thursday. by the week, partly cloudy skies on saturday, a sun/cloud

gunman. reporter elizabeth prann joins us live. what's happening there now? >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. very few details are being released by the sheriff's department this morning. we do know the name of the bus driver killed yesterday, 56- year-old charles albert pole and, junior. he's died at the hands of the suspect. he died at the hospital after the shooting on the bus. we do know there are you have few details being released at this point. right over my shoulder, that dirt road is where s.w.a.t. teams are going up and down because just blocks away is where the suspect is holding that 6-year-old boy in a homemade bunker that we know he's been building for months behind his home. now, police are not giving too many details. we know they are speaking with him through a p.v.c. pipe into that bunker. as far as the boy's condition, his motive, any reasoning for this, we do not know.

we also have sound from a witness on the school bus. take a listen. >> started telling him he needed a kid because something about the law coming after him. he shot the bus driver. >> reporter: now, we do know that the suspect was scheduled to be in court today. he was facing men yeasing charges -- menacing charges. we haven't heard from authorities as far as confirming his identity at this point. tori? >> elizabeth, is there any word on the area? i mean, are there a lot of neighbors? have they been blocked off from access to their homes? are they allowed to leave their homes? >> reporter: that's a -- this whole section behind me. it's a rural community. it's been evacuated. people are not allowed to go in and out of the area. we also know that schools in the local district are closed for the day. whether or not they will be closed tomorrow is yet to be scene. authorities are keeping a very

tight-lip on the situation. it will be a few hours before we get any clarity as far as evacuations are concerned. >> right. they are keeping the press far away from this specific location. all right elizabeth prann live for us in mitland city, alabama. thank you. 7:16. a new report warns that militants in iran pose a threat. a report says militant groups operating independently and together are increasing their activities. reportedly, the militants are determined to take revengege on the west for efforts to disrupt the nuclear program. the top commando in afghanistan says he believes afghan security forces will soon be ready to take the lead in the war with the taliban. nato troops will start to scale

hearing. gab -- gabrielle giffords stepped away from her my my row phone. five people are scheduled to testifying including mark kelly. giffords and kelly have been pushing for tighter gun control and they are getting help from dianne feinstein. also testifying today, wayne la pierre. he wants lawmakers to stop pushing law restrictions and deal with the mental health and school issues. gun owners fear their second amendment rights could be violated. we'll continue listening in on this hearing. we'll have testimony for you when i see you next hour. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. later this morning, two conservative action groups are holding a news conference right

outside of senator dianne feinstein's office showing their opposition to the assault weapons band. the groups, the western representation back will team up with the women warriors pack. the news conference is set for 2:00 this morning at 1 post street. oakland could lose the help of a california highway patrol as soon as this week if it does not stop paying the fingerprint for its effort -- department for it's effort to stop fighting crime. the chp says it's willing to help oakland for another three months but this time the chp wants to get paid. jean quan says she hopes to use state grants to cover some of the costs. ready for nicer weather? >> i am. >> expect warmer weather. look at that sunshine this morning. a live picture. coming up next, meteorologist mark tamayo will tell us which parts of the bay area will see

it is 7:29. our top story -- new search in san francisco for a missing boy who vanished almost 30 years ago. police and fbi agents went through every square inch of a home in san francisco's haight- ashbury neighborhood. that home is just steps away from where 10-year-old kevin collins disappeared in 1984. kevin was heading home from basketball practice when he vanished from a bus stop. and yesterday, cadaver dogs did detect remains in the home on masonic avenue. >> they did have a hit of some remains underneath inside the garage of this location. they believe it to be of animal origin, not human origin. >> however, police say they need to conduct more tests. they say the man who used to live in the home was a suspect at the time of kevin's

disappearance. that man has since died. >> in the meantime, despite this latest lead, the family of kevin collins continues to hold out hope for answers about his disappearance. brian flores in the newsroom to tell us why the family is cautiously optimistic. >> well, simply because they've been through this before. you have a promising lead only to not be anything. but they say this latest investigation is giving them at least a sense of hope. some family members say they let go of kevin years ago but they've always struggled with what happened. police are searching the haight issue burry neighborhood. for the -- haight-ashbury neighborhood. for the family, it's stirred up emotions, some of it hopeful, some of it guarded. we spoke to kevin's aunt and uncle who live in brentwood, they still hold the memorabilia from years ago.

they say the jc dugard case brought them hope again. >> i finally accepted he was gone but then jay see dugard was -- jaycee dugard was brought here -- found here alive. >> we also spoke with kevin's sisters who remembered the search. they say they also have reserved hope for answers. >> i think we're all ready for it to be over and have high hopes for it to be. but nobody wants to get their hopes up because it's been so many times before. >> kevin disappeared on his way home from saint agnes school in february of 1984. he was last seen at oak street and masonic heavy, half a block from the school. just five years ago, the family marked his birthday. he would have been 39. we also spoke with kevin's mother. she told ktvu she was notified of the new development a couple

of days ago. kevin's father lives in costa rica. the family says he's very difficult to reach. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news as mark tamayo showed us, the big easy is getting a big rain storm. but that's still not slowing down the preparations for this sunday's super bowl game. ken wayne is live with more. >> reporter: good morning from the french market in new orleans, just how about a half a block there -- just down about a half block there is where the famous cafe is. it's wet here. you can see the streets are wet. we have a light rain falling right now. but it was a whole different story a little while ago. we'll show you video of what it looked like earlier this morning for about a half-hour. we had some pretty intense rain falling here in the french quarter. in fact, we were told that this

squall would blow through this morning and then by noon or 1:00 this afternoon, we're expecting the skies to clear out again. but the thing that impressed me how quickly the temperature change. we went from 70, it was warm and muggy and then all of a sudden, the temperature plunged 10, 15 degrees and now it's chilly. while we're out here this morning, we ran into a san francisco chronicle columnist who is a veteran and has covered many super bowls. >> it's a school thought have it in new orleans every time. nobody else knows how to put on a party like this. the music and food is great. people get into it. i think san francisco has a great shot at the super bowl. i think they will do a great job. but new orleans sets the standards. >> reporter: back here live, you can see the rain still falling, lightly. the streets are wet but this is all supposed to clear out in a few hours and then the sun will break through. it will get hot and muggy again

here in new orleans. the people here we've been talking to say they are still waiting for the full impact of the tourists and the fans to show up. they've been trickling in over the last few days. but they say it's been quiet here in the french quarter. so they are really expecting and hoping to see a lot of fans coming to town. we no a lot of fans are on their way here to enjoy the game on sunday. and then after that, it's mardi gras, new orleans will have a very busy couple of weeks. so are we as we continue to cover super bowl xlvii. live in new orleans, ken wayne, ktvu channel 2 news. one of the all-time 49er greats is on twitter just in time for the new orleans. joe montana is sending hissest about messages to his former tale. he sent a tweet saying "good luck 49ers. looking forward to a great super bowl ." after one day,

welcoming ceremony for john kerry. confirmed yesterday by the senate as the next secretary of state. the vote was 94-3 with kerry voting present. he could be sworn in as early as friday but no official date has been set. in the meantime, new word this morning that the governor of massachusetts has selected his former chief of staff, william cowen, to temporarily fill john kerry's seat. and outgoing secretary of state hillary clinton does not see herself getting back into politics. she says she will focus on public service, speaking and writing but did not rule out running for the white house in 2016. she said whatever her decision, she's healthy and has a lot of energy. her last day on the job is friday. santa clara county will focus on healthcare and gun violence this year. board of supervisor's president ken yeager outlined his top

priorities during his state of the county address. as far as the affordable healthcare act, he wants to tackle childhood obesity, h.i.v. and consolidating mental health and drug treatment into a behavioral health department. yeager hopes to create a gun byback program and -- buyback program and encourage convicted felons to turn in their firearms. 70-year-old katherine kitty petten was killed monday night at a hampton in this littleton, new hampshire. she was in town to attend a trustee meeting for her alma mater. the attack appears to be random. the second faces second-degree murder charges. 7:37. let's bring sal back. you are still following what's going on in livermore. >> that's right. we're gonna show you video of this fatal crash that occurred

just after 6:00 this morning. a car burst into flames after being involved in a wreck. eastbound 580 at north greenville road. this car, the person inside died as a result of the injuries. these are pictures taken from newschopper2 a little while ago. 580 southbound a mess coming in from tracy. you can see that there's going to be quite an investigate. again, eastbound 580 at north greenville road. westbound 580 is slow through the area. the fire department is still on the scene. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's been slow. it's about a 20 to 25-minute delay. seems to be improving a little bit which is good news coming across into san francisco and if you are driving on the peninsula we're looking at the commute here. the traffic time between 380 and 92 is up to 12 minutes. not all that bad. if you are driving to the south bay, 101 northbound is a little bit slow just after mckee getting up to sunnyvale. let's go to mark. hi there, sal. good morning. look at this beautiful shot

looking at the moon. a few days ago, we had a full moon. very nice out there with excellent visibility. a little bit of haze. overall, a nice quiet start to the wednesday morning. no rain clouds out there. but maybe about a week from now, we could be tracking storms moving into parts of the bay area. as far as the severe weather, the -- we're showing you the live cameras out of new orleans. but by this afternoon, this front will be moving out and as a result, they are expecting more sunshine in the new orleans forecast later on today. we have nothing but clear skies. our live doppler sweep showing you the dry weather pattern. clouds heading way up to the north. pretty cold temperatures. we'll check in on those, once again out towards fairfield, napa and santa rosa, 30s. san francisco, 47 and mountain view starting out the day at about 46 des. 30s and 40s. it's 7:00 as you can see here and warming back up into the 50s and the warm of the location, the 60s.

there's that green contour that links up with temperatures ranging from right around 60 to 63. high pressure in full command of our weather. the storm track heads bay up to the north. as a result, we begin to warm things up just a littlepy. these are all minor changes for your wednesday and also thursday as well. temperatures 62 to 63 degrees. for today, we'll break it down coastside, mostly clear at 8:00. 46 by 3:00. fair skies. those readings, about 58. around the bay a very nice day. by 3:00 this afternoon. 62 but definitely the key here. want to bundle up at least over the next few hours. temperatures on the cold side could have a patch or two of fog inland. hazy sunshine by 3:00 and these temperatures on average about 2 to 4 degrees warmer than yesterday's highs. forecast highs, 58, pacifica, novato, 63. fairfield, 62 and san jose topping out at about 63 degrees. your forecast with your weekend always in view. we'll continue to warm things up a little bit for thursday

stocks are mixed after the government revealed two hours ago that economic growth shrank last quarter for the first time in three years. part of the reason was the biggest cutback in u.s. defense spending in four decades. taking a live look at the big board. the dow is currently down 24. still below 14 -- 13,928. the nasdaq is down 7. s&p down 4. well, investors' attention turns to the federal reserve which wrapped up its policy meeting -- which will wrap up in two hours. most analysts expect the fed to continue the bond-buying program. but there are reports some

members of the board want to set a time line for it to wrap up and amazon's stock is up just over 4% right now. that's after reporting its quarterly profits fell short of wall street expectations but revenue was up 22% for the period that includes the holidays and apparently amazon thinks that will continue. it announced this morning, it's hiring 1,000 workers for the three new distribution centers in texas. facebook will release its fourth quarter earnings after today's closing bell. a lot of analysts expect to see strong growth from the company. facebook has been focusing on new mobile ad campaigns. that could help boost its own bottom line. some say the ads could top $3 million from the mobile ads. and facebook is offering a preliminary settlement for its

this is the first major bridge in the country to do this. it's the first toll-taking system in the state to try this all electronic process. it's new. they are testing it right now. however, if you are crossing the bridge this morning. it will be business as usual for you. as you come through the toll plaza today at the golden gate bridge, you you won't see any different -- you won't see any different. we're starting the testing of the electronic tolling system which means we're 60 days away from the full conversion. we're trying out the new systems, the new pay by plate mechanisms. you have the license plate where you can give your credit card in the account and you only pay when you cross the bridge. >> reporter: so here's how it works -- if you fast-track, business as usual. you just roll on through. if you don't have fast-track, you have a couple of options. you can register your plate and they will make you way as you -- pay as you go through each time.

this latest incident happened at this hole. you can see there's damage on the front door. that's all blackened and charred. that's from a fire. now, police and firefighters came here to glenwood avenue at around 3:00 this morning. they say the husband, wife and adult daughter were sleeping. they heard a commotion. they walked out and found that the front door was up in flames. the homeowner was able to put it out before firefighters arrived. he told us the morning before on tuesday, his daughter's ford focus was vandalized. here is some photo showing yellow paint thrown on it and all four tires were punctured. the person who did this left the screwdriver behind. the homeowner is completely rattled and doesn't know why they are being targeted. his neighbors are also concerned. >> i'm concerned. i mean, i stopped and talked to her yesterday when we saw the car covered with paint and the tires flattened. it was more than just vandalism

a new search in san francisco for a missing boy who vanished almost 30 years ago. the police and fbi went through every square inch of this house in san francisco's haight- ashbury neighborhood. that home is just steps away from where 10-year-old kevin collins disappeared in 1984. he was heading home from basketball practice when he vanished from a bus stop. yesterday, the dog the detected remains in the area. in the meantime, this latest lead is renewing feelings for the family of kevin collins. brian flores is in the newsroom to tell us how some family members say they think kevin is still alive. >> reporter: we spoke with several family members about

within hours, police traced the get away car and brian fox was named as a person of interest. the s.w.a.t. team surrounded the home but fox was not inside. berkeley police are investigating a violent incident. police say a man stabbed two people before setting a home on fire during a tense standoff with police. the two stabbing victims are expected to survive. police say they later caught the fox as he tried to escape. he ras taken to a hospital for -- he was taken to a hospital for observation. the city could lose the crime-fighting help from the chp as soon as this week if this doesn't start paying the chp. for the past three months, chp officers have been out patrolling oakland for free but that deal ends this week. the chp says they are willing
